Rules and Policies (6 v 6 Indoor Court)

 

GAME FORMAT

  • Captains are called at the beginning of the match for a coin toss, winner of the flip will decide if they wish to serve or receive
  • Each match consists of 3 sets
  • Each set is up to 25 points, a team must win by 2 and there is a cap at 27
  • The net height shall be set at 7′ 4 1/8″ under normal play

TEAM COMPOSTION

  • A full team on the court consists of 6 players with a minimum of 2 females
  • If a team is “short” and does not meet the gender quota of 4:2, the team is required to play with 5 players – one male and one female must be on the court at all times. The minimum amount of players needed on the court for a game to take place is 4 – one male and one female must be on the court at all times.
  • Teams who cannot meet the gender requirements, or the minimum of 4 players, forfeit the game.
  • When registering a full team, there is no maximum limit to the number of players that you can have on the roster- every player that plays must be registered on the roster
  • In the spirit of sportsmanship, captains are expected to replace players with a person of a similar skill level. Bringing in “ringers” for regular season and particularly playoff games is discouraged.
  • Any dispute on playoff eligibility must follow the following guidelines: a) players must have played a minimum of two regular season games; b) be added to the roster, and if none of the above is satisfied; c) approved by coordinator or league management in unavoidable situations.

SERVICE

  • The server must hit the ball within 8 seconds after the whistle
  • Only one toss or release of the ball is allowed
  • The server must not touch the court or end line before the ball is released
  • The ball is in play if it touches the net and continues to the opponent’s side
  • To block an opponent’s service is forbidden
  • Any league not considered “Advanced”, abides by the ‘five consecutive serve max rule’.
  • The players on the serving team must not prevent their opponent, through individual or collective screening, from seeing the server or the flight path of the ball (*s. 12.5 (2017))

CONTACT OF THE BALL

  • The team is entitled to a maximum of three hits for returning the ball
  • Players may contact the ball with any part of the body, including areas below the waist
  • Faults:
    • Lift or Carry: the ball is caught and/or thrown
    • Double contact: a player hits the ball twice in succession or the ball contacts various parts of his/her body in succession
  • A double hit off of the serve or hard driven hit is allowed, provided it is made with one motion.

NET PLAY

  • A blocker may touch the ball beyond the net, provided that he/she does not interfere with the opponents’ play before or during the latter’s attack hit
  • To touch the opponent’s court with a foot(feet) is permitted, provided that some part of the penetrating foot(feet) remains either in contact with or directly above the centre line
  • A block contact is not counted as a team hit- after a block contact; a team is entitled to three hits to return the ball

ATTACK

  • A back-row player may complete an attack hit from behind the 3 metre line

MISCONDUCT AND ITS SANCTIONS

  • Incorrect conduct by a team member towards officials, team-mates or spectators is classified in three categories according to the seriousness of the offence, which may follow a verbal warning:
  • Penalty (red card): The first rude conduct in the match by any team member is penalized with a point and service to the opponent.
  • Expulsion (red and yellow card held jointly): Any player who is sanctioned with Expulsion may not play for the remainder of the set, and can be substituted legally and immediately.
  • Disqualificaiton (red and yellow card help seperately): Any player who is sanctioned with Disqualification may not play for the remainder of the game, but can be substituted leagally and immediately.

DEFAULTS

  • All teams are to be at the facility 10 minutes before their scheduled match time
  • Teams not meeting the player requirements at match time will default the first set. After 15 minutes, if they still do not meet the requirements, they will default the entire match
  • Defaults are recorded as 0-25, 0-25 for the team that defaults

STANDINGS

  • 1st criteria: % Games Won
  • 2nd criteria: Differential of points scored vs. points allowed
  • 3rd criteria: Head to head

REPORTING SCORES

  • Scores are collected and entered by the referees. In most circumstances all scores will be reported by the end of the following business day
