The SBW Ottawa softball team recently had the honor of supporting an incredible initiative involving a local community leader who traveled to Iqaluit, NU, with Haskin Canoe. This leader was tasked with teaching the Canadian Red Cross Emergency First Aid course to youth leaders from across the territory. These youth leaders would go on to run summer day camps in their communities throughout July and August, equipping them with essential skills for their important roles.
The entire training week was funded and organized by The Recreation & Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN), and it marked the 10th year of this incredible program. In fact, SBW had the privilege of participating by teaching first aid at the conference back in 2022, and it was an experience we’ll never forget!
As part of the initiative, the youth leaders were provided with supply packages to assist them in their camps. Given that the cost of food, first aid supplies, and other essential items is incredibly high in Nunavut, the youth leaders were extremely grateful for the support we brought. It was heartwarming to know that our contribution made a tangible difference in their ability to run successful, safe, and enjoyable summer camps for the youth in their communities.
We had the opportunity to gather and donate various supplies for the cause, and we made sure to share a wish list with our team and supporters. The items requested included shelf-stable pepperettes (like Hot Rods), dried fruit bars, granola bars (any flavor), individually wrapped tea bags, boxes of bandaids (fabric or plastic), and ballpoint pens.
This was yet another way our team, SBW, worked together to make a lasting impact—on and off the field—and we couldn’t be prouder of the community we’ve built. The generosity and support shown by our members was truly inspiring, and we know our efforts helped make a real difference for those youth leaders in Nunavut.
